Latest Press Release in Grand Forks Herald!

I was treated to a nice Christmas Gift on Monday morning, when I read the Grand Forks Herald's "Inside Business"section.

Actually, my Mom read it to me as I came out to eat breakfast!
Here it is:

Karboviak joins fitness network

Trainer Rick Karboviak, of Speed Dial Coach in Thief River Falls, has joined a network of fitness and sports training professionals. Karboviak is the newest member of a group of 15 independent personal trainers, all younger than 30. The "Young Fitness Masterminds" network was the brainchild of trainer Matt Elder, who was inspired after attending the Ryan Lee Boot Camp for Fitness Professionals this past September.

Karboviak performs personal fitness and sports performance training in a small group training protocol format. Individuals follow an individualized protocol for their needs, while being able to work out in a semi-private setting at the Thief River Falls Racquetball Club. Karboviak has created a free "New Year's Resolution Solutions" guide, which can be downloaded at http://speeddialcoach.com or by requesting one by phone at (218) 686-5417.

--That's right, you can download the 15 page report by visiting my site.

I've learned a lot in the short time that I've been a part of this Fitness Network I'm involved with. Making this report was just one of the many tips I've learned in how I can over-deliver to clients & potential ones.If you're not sure about the 12 Week Challenge, make sure you download this report and read it!
----------------
Got a friend who'd be interested in the 12 Week WMR Challenge?

Forward this email to them right away. Studies have shown that small group support in fitness, such as working out with a friend or relative, shows more cohesive behaviors towards an exercise regimen. Basically, the "Buddy System" is an excellent support aid for working out, more than it does for you by working out alone.

So, tell a friend and discuss with them why you both should do the 12 Week Weapons of Mass Reduction Challenge!

Stay Strong, & Endure!

FBF #40 - Fitness Tip

Fitness Tip of the Week:

The 10 Minute Jaunt - What it has done for me, and how it can help you fit in quality exercise...

Every now & then, I just get BUSY. Busy with work, busy with computer stuff for my business, and I just don't get out like I want to for a quality run.

This has happened not only recently, but throughout my career as a trainer. I really discovered the benefit of something I call the '10 Minute Jaunt' in my 2nd year of personal training & sports performance training.

I was training a large number of athletes, around 40, at the start of summer in June. To take up even more of my time, I was also running for the seat of Mayor in the town of Cooperstown, ND. I'd try to do door-to-door campaigning in my off-time in the afternoons & evenings. Plus the weekends, too. I had about 2 weeks to try and cover every single door (apartments, too) in town. I was also trying to train for 5K runs in the summertime, plus getting ready for my 2nd season of XC coaching. I would wake up at 4:30am, get ready for my run by 4:45am and get out of the door.

I'd run for only 10 minutes, trying to cover a 1.5 mile route in around 10 minutes, following the hard-easy principles of running at easy pace and at a race-pace level. I'd be back by 5am to shower, eat breakfast, and get ready for my workday at 6am at the club. My dog loved the quick runs, too. I think he got used to these short-burst runs so much, that he'd run so darn quick for the first 2 miles of a longer run, he would almost run-out of energy for the rest of the run. I think I had the fastest 1 mile dog in town!

Somedays I'd make my workouts shorter and just do 1 mile efforts for time. It would take 6 minutes or less, but my heart rate would be up really high, causing me to feel just as tired as 20 minute easy run. (By the way, with all the time I saved, I had extra time to continue campaigning for Mayor. I won the election, and you guessed it, celebrated it with my dog the next morning with another 10 minute run! Those 10 minute runs came in handy once I began the full-plate of tasks that a small town mayor had to be involved with!)

Now, I'm not saying that every workout needs to be 10 to 15 minutes worth of exercise, but if you find out you are most certainly short on workout time, everybody seems to have an extra 10 minutes around. Just make it count and don't willy-nilly your way (that means going so slow you hardly get your heart rate up there) through a workout.

I've always experienced a nice boost in mood with these types of workouts, too. Its a nice side-effect.

Happy Holidays!
Merry Christmas & Happy New Year!

Views on 2007...

Tell-A-Friend about this Blog, it may be the best news they hear all day!
-------------------
2007 Views: The response to the Fat Loss Study has brought up a lot of interest in what my business is all about. Here it is in a nutshell, because there still is some confusion out there about who I work for, and what I all do with my business at TRF Racquetball.

1. I am fully independent of the Racquetball Club with my business, and my services are seperate from a Racquetball Club membership, meaning that you can do my programs and not have to worry about any additional membership fees. I simply rent the space out to implement my services there.

2. I no longer work for, or at, any other fitness centers in Thief River Falls, as I'm exclusively at the TRF RBC. When I first moved to Thief River Falls, I worked for the hospital as an employee, and implemented services for their fitness center & sports performance training programs.

People came to know me initially when they visited the center, and wanted a training program designed for them. I rapidly became known as the only fitness trainer in town, and the anemities of the center at that time made it a really 'hot place' to come & workout. This situation however led me to a lot of burnout of my duties, as I was juggling reception work, orientations &the associated scheduling of them, plus setting up training appointments, and handling the sports performance duties, too. We had 600 members before I left, and it was a lot to try and manage as a multi-purpose trainer of many different needs. Just handling membership concerns alone was a big task in itself.
Because of this burnt-out feeling, I felt I needed a fresh take on my career to really be bold, be brave, and dare to take on the world as my own training business for fitness and sports performance.

The time came for me to claim my independence.

I resigned from that position in January '06 to fully begin my business in February. It took me until March to get my work agreement setup with the City of TRF to conduct my training at the Ralph Engelstad Arena. This agreement lasted until August 25th, when I exercised my clause to end the contract there.

3. I moved to the TRF Racquetball Club to benefit my training services and shift the focus to a 30 minute workout format. The club was a better fit for my new focus, as well as making my services more accessible for more hours with my clientele. The courts of the facility also created a feel of a "mini sports arena" for my athlete clientele.

Simply, its "Xpress Exercise for Every Body".
A 30 minute focus on workout duration for today's busy lifestyles.

So, in short, I work for myself, pay rent to the Racquetball Club, and don't work anywhere else in town.

I am here for you, my clients and customers, to serve your needs. Unlike a regular fitness center operation, I'm not worried about a large number of memberships, I'm more concerned with the quality and overall strategy that you put forth into your training, whether for fitness or for sports. I have no one above me.

Its why I've created a new Unlimited Training monthly service for my clients. A system was needed to ensure that you'd have:
1. Accountability for your workouts
2. No worries about how many sessions you have, since you already have enough to worry about in your life
3. A built-in motivation system within your strength training protocol to track progress & success more easily
4. A strength training protocol that focuses on the 6 basic fundamental movements of YOUR machine, your body.
5. A speed/agility protocol that is both innovative and highly effective for power development, using simple tools like kettlebells, jump ropes, hurdles, & cones. A monthly format enables you to choose just how long you want to commit to your training, in 1, 3, 6, or 12 month long commitments.

Everyone's different, so you need some options in life.

I provide those options. Call me if you are ready to get serious about your training for 2007.

Why?

Because 2007 isn't going to wait for 'the right time'. You have to make THE RIGHT TIME. The Right Time to Exercise, The Right Time to Prepare, The Right Time to Achieve your Goals and stop making excuses about why you can't workout on a treadmill in your basement, or why you had to waste hundreds of dollars in the past on a fitness center membership you didn't know how to utilize to the fullest. My services combine the best of fitness center flexibility, with the support & direction you need from a trusted fitness & sports performance professional, one that studies each & every day for better training methods & techniques for his clients.

All in a semi-private setting, away from the fears of 20-30 people staring at you or glancing at you, which steers you away from focusing on your efforts. When you make time, you earn what you put into your efforts.

Just because a place is open any time of the day, or for most hours of the week, doesn't mean you're going to fully take advantage of it. Why? Because all that flexibility turns it into less of a priority for you. You think in the back of your head "Yeah, I'll go there, as soon as this thing gets done", and, as you know, you never go there. "Next Time", you think. "Next Time" never comes because you don't make a dependent need for it. If you start putting a time & money value to your workout visit & attendance, because your overall progress through the system depends on your attendance & effort, wouldn't you be more than 99% likely to get to your training session you scheduled? How does 100% look?

Mighty darn good if you ask me...

Take a tip from athletes who train consistently: they have the end-goal in sight, of performing better for their team or for their individual performance goals. When it matters ,(as your health should), you make it matter. One of my clients is an up & coming cyclist in the state of Minnesota. He's placed high in local races, and has even raced down by the Twin Cities, against the 'big dogs' of cycling. He's currently doing a split workout routine with me, by doing a workout at the college, as well as a core & upper body workout with me individually. He hasn't missed a single workout, because he doesn't make excuses, he makes the time & puts forth the effort. Are you tough enough? Do you have what it takes to get ahead in 2007 and into the best health your body's ever felt? Ponder that for a while, and get to me before someone else does, before THEY take your spot. I can only handle so many clients with my training system, my projected math has me at about 25 fitness clients and 15 athletes, tops, when they get started in my system.
That's a pretty limited number of people who can take advantage of such a system.

To give you an indication of how exciting just the STAR System is, I had a client get started on it this week, after he read about it in some emails I sent him. He was so raring to go, he had his checkbook open & ready to pay before he even filled out the initial consultation paperwork, before his first testing session.

Now, THAT'S excitement, and that's a definite commitment in-hand.

All for a program that's going to deliver exactly what he was seeking: flexible scheduling, 30 minute workouts, and a complete support system of phone calls & guidance on nutrition, too. If he's that excited after just a couple emails, imagine the excitement when Christmas is over, and everyone starts putting New Year's Resolutions in full-force on their minds. The STAR System will be just what they need for many of them, who finally want to get in the best shape they can be. FBF #38 Issue

Greetings,
First things first: the Fat Loss Study for Fitness that I have begun testing for, it is still in need of some Control group members, preferably 8-12 people. The only things that the Control group needs to do is:

1. Pre-test for body composition
2. Track their own physical activity for the 2 week period
3. Post-test for body composition

The Control group does not need to schedule training sessions with me over those 2 weeks of the study. Call me at 218-686-5417 to still be on the Control Group portion of the study. I do have just 1 spot left on the 12 spots for the main Fat Loss Study on Fitness. I still need 12 for the Athlete Study for Fat Loss. I'm not sure how many could be available because I know that many young athletes right now are currently in some sports. I could still however do 8-12 people for a study. So, feel free to contact me on this as well, as I'm looking for 14-25 year-old athletes. For all the details, check out the blog:http://clicks.aweber.com/z/ct/?S.gvTQUe7sHiJNQLneZwPA

Why Being "Big-Boned" Is A Good Thing...

Recently, I've had a client who went through a 'What the Heck' Moment. Many times, people who train exclusively with Kettlebells will experience these "What the Heck?" moments. A "WTH" Moment is achieving greater feelings of health, while looking back and saying "Just how did this all happen for the better?" Sometimes, a puzzling thing occurs, and requires some digging. This just happened to me last week. My client initially came to me with a goal to lose some weight, just as many do. He then dropped around 20 pounds in a matter of a few months. He also started to get removed off his blood pressure meds, too. The increase in physical activity was benefitting him greatly! Later on, we didn't really keep track of the weight, since he was feeling so much better: now he was playing basketball in the mornings and having a ton of fun doing so. He was sleeping better, even the hunting season was more enjoyable,as he trekked through the woods with ease! We checked his weight & body comp last week, and discovered that he gained some weight back. This happened despite him feeling better, slimmer, (clothes fit better, muscles were firmer, etc), and overall health was improved greatly. This left me saying "what the heck" and led me to do some digging about it.

Normally we get caught up in the battles of Muscle Vs. Fat. I often do this as a trainer, too. What we often don't talk about, and what is a HUGE benefit for many, is the increase in Bone Density that comes from high quality strength training routines. This was the missing factor in our puzzling issue of the weight gain he had. Fat loss was occuring, as was muscle volume increase. Although, fat wasn't 'turning' into muscle. The fat cells were becoming less in size, while the muscle cells started to increase in size.

When forces are applied to the body, stress is placed on the bone cells. The bone cells adapt to this stress, just as muscles adapt to the stress of strength training. The bone cells will become thicker & more dense in order to handle the forces applied. Past experience with my training programs and senior citizens have proved how beneficial strength training can be for bone density increases.
I had one lady who was 70, she had her bone density scanned before and after going through the strength training program I had in my first job in ND. In about 6 months time, she saw a 6% increase in bone density...this is huge, considering the average loss for women after menopause is about 1%/year in their bone density. She literally gained back about 6 years of bone density losses, in just 6 months of 2-3x a week of strength training! Working out is more than just Muscle & Fat worries & woes. Build those bones up, too!
